The Tarrant County Commissioners Court is the five-member elected governing body of Tarrant County, responsible for the county tax and budget, election oversight, and public employees, and facilities including hospitals, roads & bridges, veterans services, and more.
County Judge Tim O'Hare has proposed redistricting the Tarrant County Commissioners Court, the elected body that runs the county government. This is the latest and biggest step in O'Hare's and the Republicans' abuses of power, including the arrest of a Court attendee for simply clapping.
Tim O'Hare's proposed changes target Commissioners Miles' (P-1, Red) and Simmons' (P-2, Yellow) jurisdictions, uprooting representation and paving the way for a 4-1 far-right majority on the court. Visit tarrantcountytx.gov for a detailed look.
The changes will come hard and fast if we don't stop them. Commissioners Miles and Simmons are on our side. The final vote is on June 3—we have to mobilize now.
This redistricting would be unnecessary, expensive, and unethical. The current district lines were created only 3 years ago, are legally sound, and reflect a broad community. The full cost of the process, including legal, consulting, and administrative expenses, has not been disclosed. On top of that, the entire redistricting proposal is tied to an out-of-state legal firm best known for suing states to remove voters from the rolls. Here are ways you can help:
Directly oppose the redistricting at the next Commissioners Court Meeting (the day of the vote!) at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 3. Deadline to sign up: June 2 at 5:00 PM. Sign up will open the week of May 26.
As the possible swing vote, contact Commissioner Ramirez directly to remind him that redistricting would be unnecessary, expensive, and unethical.
Spread awareness of and encourage opposition to this redistricting proposal by talking to your community, sharing on social media, and showing up at events like the community hearings and Commissioners Court meetings.
